I use a small but very effective program called AVI splitter which easily does all the cutting job, either by manually setting the start and end, or configuring it to do the job automatically. It works on the same principle as VirtualDub, so it is cross-compatible, meaning you can join files split by VD using the equivalent AVI joiner, developed by the same company, or split files using AVI splitter and then join them seamlessly with VD.

If you want to keep using it, just time reset your OS clock back one week or there is a registry hack, if anyone is interested.
