ONE MORE MILE is among the best of Clarence Brown's '80s comeback albums. A big jazz band backs the talented Texan bluesman/multi-instrumentalist here, and Brown plays with the verve and drive of a young buck. Guitar junkies will thrill to "Flipping Out", a wildly swinging blues shuffle that finds Brown riffing at supersonic speed. Fans of Brown's equally adroit violin playing should check out the stop-time sectionsof "Song for Renee"-he seems to defy gravity. Best of all is Brown's version of "I Wonder", a blues classic by rock precursor Cecil Gant. Brown sings with such intensity that you'd swear the story-a cheater's tale about a World War II soldier having doubts about his sweetheart back home-were his own.
For his second Rounder album, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown offers his "World Music Texas Style" - a compelling synthesis of blues, jazz, Cajun music and even a touch of country. With horn arrangements by Bill Samuel and Homer Brown, the album is a showcase for Gate's virtuoso abilities as a guitarist and violinist, which always tap his blues roots while offering constant musical surprises. 1984 Grammy Award finalist
