Subject: Just a Thought

In 1972 I landed on Oahu, Hawaii with my family for a three year tour. Keeping with the thought of folks being unfriendly, I noticed that while we were greeted wonderfully at the airport, things didn't always go as smooth as I had hoped. But when I sit down with my sponser, he explained there was a lot of history between the Hawaiian people and the mainland and not all of it was good, so just give them time. I did and things improved month to month as I learned their culture and the way things were done there. I learned that I needed to adapt to their ways, not the other way around. After all, I was in their front-room, not mine.

Now here in Texas the Mexicans have the same problem. Unless you know that person, you don't have a clue as to whether they are legal or illegal and that affects the way you perceive that person. Truth is, they may be as nice as I think I am, but sometimes perceptions are a bear to overcome.

I would hope in the end, we can all find some common ground and learn to live in peace and harmony. After all we only have one life and one earth and we need to make the best of both.
