Ryan O'Neal and Tatum O'Neal starred in this movie about a confidence man during the Great Depression. He would look in the local newspaper for the obituaries of men who left widows behind, knock on the widow's door and ask to talk to the deceased man. Then he would say that the man had ordered a special gold-engraved bible for his wife to get the woman to buy the book at a vastly inflated price.
Kids were in my neighborhood last week selling magazine subscriptions. Door-to-door magazine subscription sales is a scam that has been around since my grandparent's day. The worst thing about it is that the young people selling the subscriptions are being conned worst than the people who sign up for subscriptions (who usually get more than they bargained for). The kids are promised a big payout at the end of the summer -- usually a college scholarship but sometimes just a bonus -- but one morning they will wake up in their motel room and find that the crew-chief has vanished with their hopes.
The other day a door-to-door meat salesman drove up the long driveway to the barn. I spoke to him from about 50 feet away because I didn't feel like dismounting for the likes of him -- but the german shepherd discouraged him from even getting out of his truck. When he asked if she would bite, I told him that she only bit dishonest people -- so he stayed in the truck.
